News Atlas agrees funding for third Kenya project We are delighted to announce that the Atlas Foundation has granted funding for three years to the South Coast Pirates in Kenya to deliver its schools programme. Atlas aims to work with boys and girls, and we look forward to seeing their work in the Girls’ School, and making places available for girls in your other programmes, just as some of our other projects have! In April, Jason Leonard, Simon Shaw and 20 supporters of the Atlas Foundation are coming to Kenya. On Thursday 23rd April they will be at the coast, where we hope that they will be able to meet the children and coaches from the project. The south coast of Kenya may have the famous tourist destination of Diani beach but the problems encountered here in the slums of Ukunda match anything in large urban centres. There are big issues around unemployment, drugs and sex tourism. Our academy programme reaches out to youth to use sport as a foundation to build self-awareness and respect as well as to create good role models. The South Coast Pirates Academy currently works in 6 local schools: Kwale Boys High Shimba Hills Boys and Girls High Waa High Kaya Tiwi High St Josephs Primary (ages 9 to 14) Mvindeni High The Academy also engages schools for weekend coaching sessions and this has been well supported.
